What Is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill (also known as medication abortion or chemical abortion) is actually a series of two medications:

Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which your body needs to continue a pregnancy.
Misoprostol is taken next and causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.

This process is typically used in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. A follow-up visit is necessary to confirm the abortion is complete and to monitor your health.

What Is Surgical Abortion?

Surgical abortion is a medical procedure done at an abortion clinic or hospital. The type of procedure depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy:

Aspiration (vacuum) abortion is typically performed between 6–13 weeks.
Dilation and evacuation (D&E) is used after 13 weeks and involves dilation, suction, and surgical instruments.
